1986 Jerry Rice - The greatest wide receiver of all time

1986 was the first year I collected football cards, was basically Topps baseball, football and Fleer Team Action. All of those cards are long gone...This was a card I did own, but I am sure was beat-up beyond all recognition. With my luck, six year old me probably had three well centered mint condition versions of this. My current copy is a PSA 8.5, which is a keeper for me.

Even though Mr. Rice is Mr. Rice, I hesitate to overspend on modern cards. Even the :condition sensitive: caveat is not trustworthy. For example, Willie Roaf. Although he is not a "popular" player and basically only HOF rookie collectors go for the Bowman card, I will take a huge loss on that card since I am not longer participating in that collection.

This card is average. The colors are nice and I like the action shots but the border reminds me more of a spearmint hard candy rather than a yard markers.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor signature - First Hispanic Justice

Justice Sotomayor was nominated to the District Circuit by President George H.W. Bush. These Justice conversations can unfortunately quickly devolve into politic banter which I will avoid. She has been on the Supreme Court since 2009 when she replaced Justice David Souter.

Thank you Don Money, 1973 Mike Schmidt

This horribly off-center 1973 Topps Mike Schmidt rookie is a PSA 6. I will definitely be upgrading this eventually. Mike Schmidt was a dirt-dog, my favorite label of baseball player, and I was able to watch him during mid-late eighties, the end of his career. I was able to see him in the baby blues  which was great...the uniforms of the seventies and eighties were incredible. I know noting the eye candy of the "vintage" uniforms is not an original thought, I still made it, deal with it.

Supreme Court Justice - Arthur Goldberg signature

This scan is old and I do not remember if this is a cut or on a letter, I am guessing a cut. Obviously this was signed when he was Secretary of Labor under JFK. He served on the Supreme Court from 1962-65 and I must say his official portrait (as Labor Secretary) kind of sucks.

1991 UD Pedro Martinez, best Red Sox pitcher of all-time?

Pedro Martinez is one of the Red Sox top 3 pitchers of all-time, in my opinion Roger and Cy were better for longer, but all different eras. This is a 1991 Upper Deck Final Edition PSA 10. Upper Deck did have nice quality cards in their early years, damn overproduction. I am not a huge fan of the picture of this, I prefer action photos...portraits don't do it for me.

Bill Belichick, Jonathan and Robert Kraft signatures

Might as well follow-up a card only post with a signature only post. This is an signed 8x10 including Bill Belichick and both Robert and Jonathan Kraft. None of them are in the Patriots Hall of Fame, but two of them own the place and the other will be eventually...so that counts enough for me. If they win again I will need to get Bill to add to that list somehow.

1974 John Hannah: Patriots Hall of Fame 1991

I probably should have posted this first, but I had to give more love to Vince. John Hannah was the first played inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame, aka The Hall at Patriots Place, in 1991. He is one of the greatest guards/o-linemen in the NFL. I do not own any signed material of his as of yet, I'll be looking. This is a 1974 Topps PSA 8, I am not a huge fan of the design or image of this card, but welcome to the world of unlicensed 1970's NFL sports cards.

Vince.

Vince Wilfork has been my favorite player in the NFL for years. I figured I would include my autographs with the cards. This is a 2004 Topps Chrome SGC 96, I have no idea why Beckett chose Bowman over the Chrome, but I prefer the Chrome series. I was disappointed with the 96, but I guess the top/bottom centering is a little off, ohh well no intention on upgrading this.

The autographed picture is from probably one of the greatest sports moments of all time...twice in 2012 Wilfork returned a turnover and all Patriots fan had the blessed opportunity to watch him daintily saunter down the field. I was bummed when he was actually caught up to, which was surprising, both times.

For the record the Patriots better resign him.

Edited to add 2004 Bowman SGC 96 as well...a little off on L/R centering I guess.

Mama do knows best. 1980 Rickey Henderson

Thank you Rickey Henderson for one of the most glorious Hall of Fame speeches of all-time. This is the 1980 Topps rookie card which was in a GAI 8 holder. I recently cracked out all my GAI slabs, which ended up being a disaster, and am still awaiting return from SGC to determine if the process is a total unmitigated disaster. That story another time. This card was another of the cards I never thought I would be able to own. I was a huge Bash Brothers fan growing up, so I watched A's games whenever they were on. Rickey was incredible to watch and one of my favorites as well. I prefer his 1982 Topps card, epitomizes the eighties.

I do not own the card on the right, that is from beckett.com. I actually don't really own any other cards except rookies. So in the future if I ever do rip anything, most cards will be available.

To wrap up, this is still one of my favorite cards and hopefully will come back a 96 from SGC, if not I have no intention on upgrading this one I am satisfied.

1968 Topps Nolan Ryan - A bit loved

I figured this card would be a good starting point for the baseball collection as this was one of the first cards I purchased returning to the hobby. I grew up watching Ryan towards the end of his career. Luckily, I had the opportunity to watch him in the Astros rainbow...

,,,and finish up with the Rangers. This was one of the cards I never thought I would own as I saved my allowance for the wood cards (Eric Davis where you at).

This is a BVG 3.5 which fits perfectly in my budget. If I am ever able, this is one card I would like to upgrade...after I finish the set though.
